What is a Carbon Filter?
Activated carbon filters are also known as activated charcoal filters. They are used to combat volatile organic compounds that are released into the air from common household products. Carbon filters use a process called adsorption to clear impurities and eliminate strong odours. Using a hydroponic carbon filter in your grow room, contaminants and pollutants stick to the carbon and cleanse the air.
Types of Carbon Filters
Active carbon filters come in two varieties, each with their pros and cons. There are granular activated carbon filters and solid block carbon filters. Granular carbon is carbon that has been ground into small particles. Solid block carbon has a larger surface area and is made by grinding the carbon into a fine powder, then pressing it into a block form. Both kinds of filters are great for odour removal. Both of these types of carbon filters can be used for water filtration using a reverse osmosis system.
How Effective are Carbon Filters?
Carbon filters are effective for filtering contaminants and fighting volatile organic compounds also known as VOCs. VOCs are gaseous substances released into the air from common products such as cleaning products, paint or tobacco. Most other air filters such as HEPA filters do not clean the air of VOCs and the odours will remain in your space.
The premium range tends to have a slightly deeper carbon bed.
They are also useful in controlling humidity as well as unpleasant odours, and so helping to keep your growing environment consistent when paired with an extraction system for fresh air.
Carbon Filters in a Grow Room
Growers often find that their grow tents or grow rooms have strong unwanted odours. Activated carbon filters can scrub the air and take care of the odour problem. Additionally, airborne pathogens have been known to ruin the entire yield of plants. An activated carbon filter can eliminate these contaminants from the air thus preventing diseases from affecting the plants.
